Dementia Caregiver Support

Introduction – A Legal Practice That Cares About Community

At Lumsden Law, we understand that legal support is just one part of what Florida families need when navigating life’s most challenging seasons. Estate planning, probate, elder law, and guardianship issues often overlap with emotional and personal journeys—including the heartbreaking progression of memory-related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

We regularly meet with spouses, adult children, and caregivers overwhelmed by the demands of supporting loved ones with memory loss. These families face difficult legal, financial, and emotional decisions, including navigating the complexities of Trusts vs Wills and planning for long-term care. That’s why, even though Lumsden Law is not affiliated with the facility or speaker mentioned here, we proudly support and promote resources that serve our community. Today, we want to highlight a local support group open to the public that offers just that kind of guidance and connection.

Introducing a Trusted Local Resource – Memory Loss Support Group by Inspired Living at Ocoee

Inspired Living at Ocoee, a senior living facility located just outside of Winter Garden, is hosting a monthly Memory Loss Support Group designed to support caregivers and families of individuals facing Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other forms of cognitive decline.

This in-person gathering provides education, encouragement, and a sense of belonging for those in one of the most challenging roles a person can take on: caring for someone losing their memories. As an Estate Planning & Probate Law Firm in Winter Garden, FL, Lumsden Law recognizes how vital these local resources are in helping families navigate both the legal and emotional aspects of memory care.

Why This Support Group Matters for Florida Families

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6.9 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s today, and more than 11 million people are providing unpaid care for those individuals. In Florida alone, there are over 580,000 people aged 65 and older living with Alzheimer’s. The emotional, physical, and financial toll on caregivers is immense.

This group exists to:

  • Offer emotional relief: Caregivers often feel alone, isolated, or exhausted. Support groups offer peer connection and understanding.
  • Provide educational guidance: Learn from professionals and experienced caregivers about strategies for daily care, communication, and long-term planning.
  • Empower legal and medical decision-making: While not a legal forum, the topics discussed may help attendees think critically about the importance of advance directives, guardianship, and estate planning.

Memory Loss and the Legal Implications – A Word from Lumsden Law

Although Lumsden Law is not involved in this event, we serve many Florida families facing the legal realities of memory-related illnesses. Conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia can quickly interfere with a person’s ability to make decisions or manage their affairs.

That’s why timely legal planning is essential. If you or your loved one has been recently diagnosed—or is showing signs of cognitive decline—now is the time to take action on:

  1. Durable Power of Attorney – Designate someone to manage financial matters before mental capacity declines.
  1. Health Care Surrogates & Living Wills – Legally document medical wishes and appoint someone to make decisions if needed.
  1. Trusts & Wills – Protect assets, name beneficiaries, and avoid probate where appropriate.
  1. Guardianship Planning – Understand when and how court-appointed guardianships may become necessary if planning wasn’t completed in advance.

We help families not just draft these documents but understand what they mean—and how they will affect future decisions.

How Support Groups Strengthen Legal Planning

What does attending a support group have to do with legal preparedness?

A lot, actually.

  • Greater Awareness: Attendees often leave with a better understanding of what to expect as diseases progress—this informs smarter, more proactive legal planning.
  • Shared Resources: Many families discover attorneys, doctors, care managers, or financial planners through peer recommendations at support meetings.
  • Better Decision-Making: Hearing others’ stories helps caregivers recognize potential pitfalls in delayed planning, prompting timely action.
